Coily hair: choosing a shape around your natural texture
Coily hair can have substantial volume and clear natural texture. The dry form you see is the starting point for a useful discussion. A photograph of another texture or stretched hair says less than your own hair in its normal state.
Decide on the outline you want to see
Discuss whether you want a rounded, compact, tall or more elongated shape. Point out where you want to retain volume and where you want the outline calmer. The outer line is an intentional part of the haircut, not a by-product of cutting shorter.
A front and side reference help assess height and width separately.
Agree on edges and top separately
A fade, taper or temple contour can sit alongside plenty of top length. Explain separately what should happen at the sides and how much natural texture you want to preserve above.
If you want a defined line at the hairline, indicate the intended form and view it in proportion to your own natural edge.
Match the shape to your care
Explain how you normally moisturise, detangle or arrange your hair. The haircut should fit those actions and how your hair grows between appointments.
Ask to view the result from different directions. You can then see whether the shape feels balanced everywhere, not only crisp from one angle.
