Cutting dense hair: reducing bulk without losing your shape
Dense or thick hair can offer plenty of volume, but may also feel wide, heavy or warm. The answer is not always less length everywhere. It helps to point out where you want the form lighter and where you want to retain volume or length.
Identify the weight you feel or see
Explain whether the hair becomes too heavy beside your ears, at the back or on top. “Too thick” is a starting point, but the place and way it falls direct the haircut. Show how wide the hair becomes when dry too.
Do not automatically reduce bulk where you need coverage or a defined outline. The outer shape remains important even if less mass is needed within it.
Choose what happens to the perimeter
A shorter perimeter and less bulk are different changes. If you want to keep length over the ear but reduce width, say so directly. If you want a more compact silhouette, show the new outer line too.
Use a photo of your own grow-out if you know where the haircut becomes too heavy. It is more specific than a model with different hair density.
Test everyday movement
Dense hair can fall differently after washing or sport than it does straight after the cut. Explain whether you wear it backwards, forwards or loose. The shape needs room for that movement.
At the final check, run your own hands through the hair. You can then feel whether the weight and length work before the form is adjusted further.
