Buzz cut: choose the short length before the clippers start
A buzz cut is a very short haircut in which clippers play a central role. It does not have to be exactly the same length everywhere. First decide between an even length and a slightly longer top with shorter sides.
Do not rely on a number alone
Clipper settings and guards are not a shared language for everyone. Ask what visible length a proposed setting will leave. A photograph of your own previous short haircut is more useful than a number found online.
When unsure, discuss starting longer and assessing it. More length can be removed during the appointment; a top cut too short cannot be restored immediately.
Decide how much scalp you want to see
At very short lengths, differences in density and growth direction become more apparent. A buzz cut does not make hair thicker. Consider whether you like the visible shadow, including where your hair grows less densely.
Ask your barber to include the crown and sides in that discussion. A reference featuring different hair density cannot predict how much scalp will show on you.
Make the edges part of the decision
A natural hairline and a sharply defined outline give the same short length different impressions. Agree whether the neckline and temples can taper shorter or whether you prefer a simple, uniform shape.
Little styling does not mean the length stays unchanged. Choose maintenance according to how short you want it; a brush or product cannot return grown hair to the chosen length.
