Low or high fade: choosing the height of your contrast

The main difference between a low and high fade is where the short transition begins and ends on the side. A low fade leaves more visible hair higher up; a high fade brings contrast closer to the top. The shortest length can be the same in either.

Look at the space above the transition

With a low fade, more visible hair usually remains between the transition and the top. A high fade makes that area smaller. Choose based not only on “how short”, but on how much dark or full side hair you want to see.

Look at a reference from the front and side. A high transition can make the top feel more compact from the front, while a lower one may retain more width.

Have the placement indicated on your own head

The same photograph can feel different on another head shape. Ask your barber to indicate low and high placement with a hand or comb before length is removed. That lets you choose a proportion, rather than only a name.

A middle height is available too. If you like aspects of two references, point out what you want from each rather than treating the choice as only two possibilities.

Do not confuse height with finish

A low fade can go down to skin and a high fade can retain a short shadow. State separately what bottom length feels right. This prevents a high reference from accidentally producing a closer finish too.

For maintenance, think about the transition you want visible. The stronger the contrast, the sooner grow-out is noticeable; that is not a quality difference between the two options.
